Ek Thitili ....Down the Memory lane

I have been thinking the other day reminiscing the days of my past and thought of sharing the few rollicking/rocking moments of "DoorDarshan" which i enjoyed in the past. The earliest things which i remember are the progrmames which came in doordarshan which was so much informative.

All the kids in my neighbourhood use it assemble at sanju's place in '82 to watch the "oliyum oliyum (tamil version of "chitrahaar") / at my place to see one new song which would have come for diwali / new year. Whenever there is Christmas / Good friday, Sivaji used to sneek into my house with "thevane ennai parungal" / another song from vellai roja. Even on the new year, there used to be songs like "happy indru muthal happy" (which means i am happy from today) / a song from kamal movie guru.

I even remembered prepared a skit based on the schedule of doordarshan with their schedule. for those who has forgotten the classic schedule, here it is ( i hope DD still sticks with the similar one...)

11:30 - kanpom Karpom (best classes of Dr Nannan)

Enga "pa" ezhuthunga .."pa" "da" "il" - "paadal" "padayal illapa paadal"

ezhuthiteengala azhachidatuma (can i rub the board ?)

12:30 - vizhuthugal ....(most probably most of the "aunties" wud be fan club members of this !!!)

2:00 - shanthi - oru (periya) kudumbathin kadhai

3:30 - thanmanam (swabhimaan) - this was mahesh bhatt / shoba de's crap one.. i seriously understood who went with whom ...indian version of bold and beautiful (u cannot keep track which character was going with XYZ)

4:00 - some crap AVM serial

5:32 - kanmani poonga (they are only ones to start at 5:32...)

Jayagopal garodia palli manavargalin isai nigachi...

5:50 - manai maachi ...

pinju pona thuniyil bommai seivathu eppadi endru solli thara varugirar vimala ramanan (some lady name !!!)

6:10 - ulavarum olikathir - this is the one prgm all "oldies" will watch where they show all kumbashikams...blah blah..

6:30 - naatupura kalaigal... vijayalakshmi navaneethakrishnan kuzhuvinarin paatu...

7:00 - kaani nilam thantha varam thavaram ....(how can one forget this sweet rendering of MSV's grammy classical)

In this the comedy was most of the time the guy(agri college prof / fertiliser company guy) wud talk in english to the tamil farmers about farming...

sample converstaion wud be like this ....

manavari paguthiyila....neenga 3 kilo "kadalai punnakum" 2 kilo super potashyum serthu payrukku thelicheengana...amoga magasool kidaikum, athoda "sottu neer pasanam" muraiyila neenga vevisayam senjeekangana...nalla 3 bogam parkalaam... (most of the words i never understood)..

some Fertiliser urea ad will also appear....with one guy on dhoti and banian...he he ...

7:30 - extra ordinary tuesdays... - u will get the indigenous "play" which is conceived by DD itself.

the same devi lalitha /j lalitha / gopi / delhi ganesh & co will act and the best part will be the sets where there will be one sofa / one stair case (with 3/4 steps) and the steven spieleberg of drama (Mr GPR who directs the crap)..

8:31 - desa bhakthi padal....- remember DD was a predecessor to ARR in promoting maa tujhe salaam...

8:40 - All time favourite Shobana Ravi / Fatima Babu ("kuranji malar fame...he he ) will keep blasting with rajiv gandhi's foto being flashed during the sports section...

9:00 - back to national programmes...

Though the above-mentioned was dig at DD, there are wonderful progrmames which were conceived like Quiz time / Sports quiz (by Dr Narottam puri) .../ world of sport (anupam gulati)
ramayan and so on...

I wud still enjoy the edhiroli - feedback session where a DD guy will never accept that they mada mistake - was a class comedy.

Modern day u have more variety but still the impression left by DD on me and some of you wud be indellible mark.

except for the few technical havocs where if the batsman hits on the leg side, the cameraman will still focus on the off-side in cricket matches and the expressions to say that the time is running out.

Thinking about DD gives so much of joy....watching i doubt it might give me the same...

jot down your memories....about DD

Meendum ungalai sandhikum varai ungalidum vida peruvathu ungal abhimana....

/Lakshman...Lakshman Lakshman......(echo pa !!!)

Those old days! Sometimes we were so bored that we watched Vayalum Vazhvum, Edhiroli etc - for the sheer fun factor.

Sample conversation from Edhiroli.. The most crappy one..

- adutha kadidhatha padingamma..
- Idhu kogoorlendhu muthupechi ezhidhi irukaanga sir. (The letter would be in perfect tamil that it sounds made up) Manai maatchi nigazhchiyil neengal katrukodutha kizhindha thuniyil irundhu bommaigal seyvadhu eppadi.. kandom, katrom. Engal veetu kuzhandhaigalukku adhu migavum ubayogamaga irundhadhu. Mikka nanri. Mudindhal irandu kizhisal thunigalai anupavum..

That guy (name Raghavan??) replies, "Nanri. Ippadi pala neyargal engalukku ezhudhiyullargal (ya, right). Ungalukkagave andha nigazchiyai maru oliparapu seiygirom (oh, shit!) varum thingal, sevvai, velli matrum nyayiru (what a random selection of days! This is to fit in the free slots available)"

Nevertheless, it was fun to sit and watch with 20 people around you (My entire street would have one or two televisions those days!). We used to have competitions to guess which songs would be played in Oliyum oliyum etc.

Those old days!!!

'shanthi' is an epic :P
i used to look for the ancient red telephone in the tuesday dramas. it was a regular in all the dramas :D
i think i still remember the phone number they used to announce as the line to contact to give information about missing people. isn't it 8253375?
the world this week, turning point, surabhi - they are all wonderful programs.
